Sportingbet.com.au – Tour de France
December 30, 2008 11:00 am General Sportwww.sportingbet.com.au – his may all seem a little déjà-vu, as Lance Armstrong, the seven time winner of the prestigious Tour de France made an announcement that he was coming out of retirement to participate in the 2009 season. Armstrong, who is now 37 years of age, has already made history by being the oldest participant to win the Tour de France. He has announced that he will make his comeback starting here in down under in Adelaide come next January for his buildup to the most anticipated cycling event in the world.
Understandably, Armstrong is having his concerns about his own safety after the recent media hype about his positive test for the banned blood boosting erythropoietin that allegedly help him win the title in 1999. It’s been sad that fans, especially the French are angry that Armstrong has tainted the sport that they are so proud of. And it’s not only the spectators Armstrong is losing hair over. He has a strained relationship with the organizers of the event, the Amaury Sports Organization (ASO) who announced last month that his return will be embarrassing.
Regardless, Armstrong has always maintained the fact that he is clean, and in fact was cleared by an investigator from Dutch that is appointed by the International Cycling Union.
Nevertheless, this news is generally welcomed by cycling athletes, for they would have a chance to race against a legend. What will be interesting to see however, is to see a 37 year old man, beat men of more than 10 years his junior. I maintain the view that Armstrong is still a favourite, and might just win his next title.
