McGain, who is no stranger to records, also became the oldest test cricketer (at the ripe old age of thirty six) to make his debut for Australia.

Despite a horror start, selectors (including Merv Hughes who overlooked paceman Andrew McDonald) declared that they would not have changed their selection in any case.
They had also stated that they would have much preferred an extra batsmen but did not feel that anyone currently in the domestic competition has what it takes to don the baggy green.
