NRL Update
June 1, 2009 11:00 am Rugby League NRLNRL Update: The current National Rugby League ladder is doing nothing for the punter when deciding who to back in this season’s flag race.

The top-four teams – Bulldogs, Knights, Dragons and Broncos – are all locked on 14 points apiece. Last year’s premier, Manly, are in 12th position on eight points, while the favourites for this year’s premiership, the Melbourne Storm, sit fifth, just one point astern of the top-four.
But the Storm is only one point ahead of three teams also chasing a top-four position. It makes for an intriguing run to the finals. The ladder will, no doubt, experience a re-shuffle, but where does it leave punters?
Usually the ladder is the main point of reference when tipping on a game or placing a wager on a team to win the premiership. Not this year.
The Bulldogs, the leading team at present and a team which has been promising to deliver for a few seasons, are rated a $9 chance for the premiership with Sportingbet. Manly, meanwhile, are just $10, despite being in 12th position.
With all this uncertainty comes value for punters. The Melbourne Storm, though, in my view are under the odds at $5 for a team that has shown patchy form so far. This is backed up by the ladder positions.
Now is the time to bet if you know your NRL. The odds are as healthy as they will ever be this season, due to the incredibly even ladder, and the generous prices will not continue all season.
