January 5, 2009 11:00 am FootballAfter losing Didier Drogba, joe Cole, Michael Essien and Ricardo Carvalho for long periods, Chelsea is just behind Premier league front runner, Liverpool by just one point. But success is not without its price, Luiz Felipe Scolari is left with a squad faced with injuries just after the first half of the season.
Scolari is now desperate and is trying to persuade Chelsea’s coffers to give him a new striker in the upcoming transfer window in January. Scolari says he needs another first class attacker given the number of injuries that his team has. He also knows that success will come a easier if Blues owner, roman Abramovich is a little more generous.
But the global credit crunch has spared no one, not even a billionaire like Abramovich. Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon has mentioned many times this season, that there’s little to spend in January. But despite this, Scolari will continue to plead with Abrmovich and Kenyon to open their wallets on one player.
It appears to be a difficult time for change, but perhaps Scolari has no choice. In the Arsenal game, Di Santo and Drogba were lost, and in the Boltoh game, only Anelke was left. Without a new player, Scolari’s options are limited.
Scolari is probably eyeing CSKA Moscow striker Vagner Love, but in the meantime, the problem has gotten bad enough for him to suggest untried youngsters like Mirosalv Stoch, Michael woods and Scott Sinclair just to keep his players off the injuries bench.
Hence, it seems that unless the financial crisis ease up, it appears that Scolari’s solution can only lie with young players.
