Centrebet.com.au – Golf world cup
January 3, 2009 11:00 am Golfwww.centrebet.com.au – The golf world cup was taken by the Swedish, Robert Karlsson and Henrik Stenson in a dramatic win at Mission Hills in China. The score for the Swedish was a nine under 63 that beat next in line, Spain’s duo, Miguel Angel Jimenez and Pablo Larrazabal. With Spain second, Japan and Australia tied for the third place. The defending champions Scotland was 20 points back from the Swedish.
Even before the start of the much anticipated game, the Swedish was already a hot favourite to win, and despite starting on the final day four behind the runner up, five birdies moved them up to the winner’s spot.
The Australian team was quite a disappointment, with a score of 73. That’s eight shots behind the Swedish, but on par with the Japanese who put up a superb game.
This is the second win for the Swedish, after a long drought of winners since 1991 in Rome, which was won by Johansson and Anders Forsbrand.
Nevertheless, the Swedish has put up a fine performance, especially Henrik Stenson, who has enjoyed a very good season and played very well albeit not winning any tournaments until the World Cup. There are two more to go in South Africa which he will continue to play, and I will certainly be putting my money on him, seeing how consistent he is, plus given his win at this recent world cup.
As for Ireland, who has traditionally done reasonably, Paul McGinley and Graeme McDowell had their worst game ever with a five over 77 to finish at 16th position.
