February 19, 2009 11:00 am General Sportwww.centrebet.com.au – Australian cycling star Cadel Evans will not ride in this year’s Tour of Italy so he can concentrate on winning the greatest cycling event in the world – the Tour de France.
Evans, who has finished second in the last two consecutive Tours de France is hungrier than ever to take top spot on the podium after being the bride’s maid in a drug affected 2007 tour and Spanish dominated 2008 tour.
This has lead him to pull out of the Giro de Italia which will take place between the 12th and 21st of June – less than one month before the start of the Tour de France.
Although Evans has openly stated that he would love to ride in the Giro de Italia, it does not best suit his training regime for the bigger race in France in July.
Evans burst onto the scene after the retirement of undoubtedly the greatest cyclist of all time, seven time winner of the Tour de France, Lance Armstrong retired after his seventh consecutive win in 2006.
However, Evans will now go head to head with Armstrong and his Astana team mates in a bid to become the first Australian ever to win the world of cycling’s most prestigious event.
In order to gain the best possible run up to the Tour de France, Silence team leader Evans will train through the month of June along with his team rather than put their bodies through the grueling and arduous task of competing in consecutive tours. www.centrebet.com.au
