Of course it must be that time of the year when the white sweaters come out, the champagne starts flowing and the strawberries as sold in their thousands as the all England Lawn Tennis club host the English Grand slam at Wimbledon.

A shock early exit from the French Open last month month from Raphael Nadal saw Roger Federer breeze to a fourteenth Grand Slam title to equal the great Pete Sampras in career Grand Slams,
A niggling injury then forced Nadal to pull out of the English Open at Wimlbedon leaving the door wide open for Federer to complete the fairy tale and become the greatest tennis player ever – and recapture his long held number one ranking.

According to centrebet.com Federer is the red hot favourite ahead of American Andy Roddick, Scotsman Andy Murray, Novak Djokic, Tommy Haas and new comer Robin Soderling.

It would be foolish to bet against Federer who though not noted as a grass court specialist, continues to wow audiences on any surface.

The women’s competition offers a little better value at Centrebet.com despite the fact that the Wiliams sisters have had a virtual strangle hold on the tournament for the last seven years.

But, currently, the focus is on the lead-up tournaments. Sportsbet offers multi-bets and specials on tennis, and free bets can be used on the sport. The Queens Club tournament and Halle are currently the main ATP markets, with head-to-head betting updated regularly.

With Sportsbet, while it can vary, betting on matches, sets and outright tournament winners are all available. You can also bet on the first set score for Queens Club matches, as well first set score and sets total.

Sportingbet.com.au also has a market on the 2009 Davis Cup. While Australia is not present in the World Group, there is sure to still be interest. Spain is easily the favourite at $2.10, while Russia and the US are both at $5.50 to win the team event.

But many punters will be eyeing Wimbledon. Odds are not currently available, but they can be obtained at Sportingbet outlets. Roger Federer is the clear favourite, with Andy Murray and defending champion Raphael Nadal close behind.

Nadal may be carrying an injury into the tournament, which will make punters wary. But, if the Spaniard is fit, the current price, of around $4.50, is over the odds.

In the coming days, the markets for Wimbledon will expand steadily as we move closer towards the start of tennis’s showpiece Grand Slam, which begins on June 22.

He has also been named on Time magazine one hundred most influential people.

The red hot Spaniard will justifiably take the tag of favourite into the French Open at Roland Garros in three weeks time given that not only does he appear unbeatable at the moment, but he will be playing on a clay surface – his favourite surface.

It will be no easy task however with the like of Federer (2nd), Djokovic (3rd) and Murray (4th) all snapping at his heels having posted recent victories of their own.

There is also plenty of time for he (and his opponents) to play themselves into form with six major ATP tournaments between now and the French Open which Begins on the 24th of May, so make sure you get your bets in on time at CentreBet!

Five of those events will take place on clay surfaces meaning all players will get plenty of court time on the red stuff before tackling Roland Garros.

Most notable of the tournaments are the Internazionali BNL Italia in Rome which is currently under way and offers over 2.5 million dollars in prize money and the Mutua Madrilena Masters in Madrid with nearly 4 million dollars in prize money on offer.

A number of smaller clay tournaments including the BMW Open in Germany, the Serbian Open and the Austrian Open should provide the perfect stepping stone to the major and give a better picture of who’s hot and who’s not so you can improve your odds when you bet online at CentreBet.com.au.

If tennis doesn’t float your boat, why not bet on NRL or Yachting – the possibilities are endless.

Although it was expected, it was also surprising to see world class players including world number ones Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams, Andy Murray and Venus Williams all struggle but advanced Monday at the ATP and WTA hardcourt tournament in Miami.

To place a betclick here!

Nadal, the Australian Open champion was obviously unhappy with his performance, but still managed to reach the fourth round after taking out Portugal’s Frederico Gil. His next opponent will be either Swiss 16th seed Stanislas Wawrinka or Russian 20th seed Igor Andreev.

Murray, who is ranked fourth also advanced to the last 16 by defeating Chilean Nicolas Massu, and he will be taking on Serbian Viktor Troicki. The William sisters each will need three sets to advance into the women’s quarter finals. Serena managed to outlast China’s 17th seeded Zheng Jie and progress into the game to match up against either China’s Li Na or Russian Ekaterina MAkarova.

It appears for some particular reason, all the world number ones have problem living up to their names in this game. Nadal wasn’t polished in his usual way. Serena Williams frustratingly said that she had a lot of errors.

What will be interesting will be seeing reigning Wimbledon champion Williams meeting her top ranked sister Serena in a Miami semi –final.

Australian Samantha Stosur who is ranked 42nd continued progressing into the quarter finals by taking out French 20th seed Amelie Mauresmo. Danish 13th seed Caroline Wozniacki took the hard earned game against Elena Dementieva and also progressed into the quarter finals.

www.iasbet.com.au – New anti doping laws in tennis will mean that elite tennis player will need to be on call and able to produce a sample at any hour of the day which has some of the top players fuming.

Under new anti doping guidelines, international tennis officials have the right to show up without prior warning to obtain a urine sample from any player for testing.

Andy Murray was furious with the new laws claiming that less than four days after bowing out of the Australian Open, an official arrived at his private home at 7 am demanding he produce a urine sample while the official looked on to ensure it was indeed Murray’s own urine.

PLAY NOW

A jet lagged Murray had provided a urine sample directly after his defeat at the Australian Open and was allegedly asked to prove his identity as well as forms indicating his permanent residency.

According to the new laws, if a player refuses to give a sample three times over an 18 month period the could be suspended for up to two years.

Raffael Nadal also sided with Murray claiming that the new regulations were borderline harassment.

No longer does a player have a date set for them on which they will provide the sample, it can happen at any time and if said player is unable to take the test they must provided a reasonable excuse lest it count as a strike.

Roger Federer was all for the new testing claiming that it is the best way possible to catch drugs cheats and ensure the sport of tennis remains as clean as possible. www.iasbet.com.au

centrebet - To be recognized as your country’s best tennis player in a land with form and history in the sport is one thing – and Gilles Simon will be delighted to take a bow before a home crowd in Paris this week as the season draws to a close.
But the French number one singles player is surely due a little recognition from beyond the borders of ‘La Grande Nation’ after vaulting into the world top ten.

Memories can be short in sport – though where the women are concerned Amelie Mauresmo’s Australian Open and Wimbledon double is hardly sepia-tinged having been achieved in 2006.
Among the men, however, French fans hardly need reminding that Yannick Noah’s 1983 Roland Garros triumph gave his compatriots their only singles Grand Slam title in the Open Era.

That’s a long way behind the 7100 of top-ranked Rafael Nadal but a fine haul for a new name keen to stay ahead amid healthy domestic competition from Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Richard Gasquet (absent this week through injury) and Monfils, who are 14th, 15th and 16th in the standings.

His chief rivals are Spaniard David Ferrer, American James Blake and up-and-coming Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka.

With China swimming into focus Simon says he is aware he must watch out he doesn’t ‘fall into the trap of wanting to play too well’ against fans who will demand more of the same after watching him dump Nadal in his own backyard of Madrid.

‘I’ll try not to lose sight of what I’m aiming at’, he insisted

Australian Open Odds – Tennis Coming Up

Tennis No Comments

Well, it really isn’t too far away until the 2007 tennis year begins with the www.AustralianOpen.com.au Tennis Championships. Every year we seem to hear about the chances in the mens tournament but it eventually fades out and Federer ends up the victor.

Again, Federer is starting the AustralianOpen as favourite, at 1.40 to win the tournament. Of course this seems very short odds for someone who has to win seven best of 5 set tennis matches in a row, but realistically Federer is going to be at between 1.01 and 1.05 odds to win most of these matches.

So who can challenge Roger Federer in the 2007 www.Australian Open.com.au? Perhaps a better question to ask is: Did you know the surface has been replaced over the past 12 months? There are reports that it is now a faster surface, which is what many players have been asking for. The most vocal in this regard is Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt. Will this help him? Will his mind still be on tennis after a packed couple of years (getting married and having his first child)? Hewitt is 29.00 to win the 2007 Australian Open tennis.

Don’t forget about world #2, Rafael Nadal who you can back at 6.50, or Andy Roddick at 13.00. Interestingly, Roddick gave Federer a shock at the 2006 season ending Masters tournament when he was only a couple of points from winning the match. Federer escaped that time, but who will put in the hard work in the off season?

The next line of betting sees the 2005 Federer destroyer Marat Safin at 26.00. One must note that the epic 5 set encounter between Federer and Safin at the 2005 Australian Open was voted the best match of that year – and Safin won it.

Federer looked very shaky in the 2006 Open against Davydenko, who is next at 26.00. Last years surprise finalist Marcos Baghdatis is at 34.00 along with the other surprise performer in Ivan Ljubicic (34.00 also).

Whatever way you look at it, the Australian Open is the toughest tennis event on the calendar for a number of reasons including the fact that it’s pretty much the first tournament of the 2007 year – anyone that has been partying too much over the break will be sorely tested in Melbourne. The other reason is the extreme heat and only a certain number of players can handle it.

Masters Tennis Odds – First Seed Meets Last Seed in Final

Tennis No Comments

James Blake continued his excellent form to thump David Nalbandian 6-4, 6-1 at the Masters Cup in Shanghai overnight. His win sets up an unlikely final matchup with World number 1, Roger Federer after he walked over Rafael Nadal in straight sets.

The odds for the final are predicting a very one sided affair, with Federer as short favourite.

Tennis Odds – Masters Semi Final Showdown

Tennis No Comments

Rafael Nadal will meet Roger Federer in the semi final of the season ending Masters Cup in Shanghai later today. Nadal came from a set down to beat Davydenko yesterday to book his ticket with Federer.

Nadal and Federer have had many battles over the past couple of years, however Nadal has only been able to triumph on clay. Federer is commanding favouritism for this match, post at 1.16 with Nadal at 5.15. Nadal’s form has not been overly outstanding this week to warrant much better, given that he has struggled in a couple of matches and lost to James Blake.

If you’re looking for some betting value, don’t go past the second semi-final between Blake and David Nalbandian. Blake has been on form this season and seems to be peaking this week. Expect a fiery showdown between two players who have differing styles of play. Blake seems the value at 2.05 while Nalbandian is 1.76.

Tennis odds – Federer Tested by Roddick

Tennis No Comments

The season ending Masters Cup in Shanghai continues this week. This round robin event features the worlds best players fighting it out for the last individual crown of the season, and there certainly have been plenty of fights this week.

Nadal has already lost unexpectedly to James Blake, and World number 1 Roger Federer was tested very strongly in an excellent showing by Andy Roddick earlier today.

Roddick, who dropped to his 8th successive defeat at the hands of Federer, was fired up to win this clash today – however he fell at the final hurdle. In fact, many say Roddick had plenty of chance to finish the match off when he was 1 set up and leading 4-1 in the 2nd set tie-break, effectively just 3 points from the match.

As usual, Federer found something special when he needed it, and the rest is history. But does this raise questions as to weather he can go on to win this tournament?

Bookies have Federer at a very skinny $1.18 to raise the cup – you can pretty much write your own ticket on any other player (Nadal, Blake and Roddick at $13, Davydenko at $17, Nalbandian at $67 and Ljubicic at $81).

It’s hard to go past Federer at the worst of times, and this is no different. Perhaps Roddick could finish him off in the final or will Nadal prove to be a thorn in his side again this season. Stay tuned for what should be a very interesting end to the season.
