Centrebet.com.au – The weekend’s national swimming championships heralded a changing of the guard for the seemingly invincible women’s swimming team after long time champion and multiple gold medallist Libby Trickett failed to so much as make the podium in the women’s premier event – the one hundred metres butterfly.

The one hundred metres butterfly has become the star studded event of Australian swimming following the men’s recent slide into international anonimity while the girls have been flying the flag.
In total, their were seven Olympic gold medals spread between the field but it was Jess Schipper who nudged out Australia’s swimming golden girl Stephanie Rice to claim victory and ultimately end Trickett’s dominance in the event.
Trickett managed a relatively distant fourth and will not represent Australia at the World Championships for the first time in nearly five years.
Rice continue to go from strength to strength as she gives up for a fully loaded til at the world championships, hoping to sport a Michael Phelps like meeting card to stamp her authority as the queen of international swimming.
Schipper was extremely emotional following the event given that a swimsuit malfunction just prior to her attempt to take the individual gold at Beijing left her clutching a bronze behind two Chinese swimmers.
To add insult to injury, she later found out that her the Coach Ken Wood had assisted the two Chinese swimmers in their respective regimes leading up to the Olympics.

Despite what may single the end of a stellar career, the future looks extremely bright for Australian women’s swimming.

Swimming star Michael Phelps has escaped potentially career ending criminal charges after picture of the greatest Olympian ever smoking what appears to be a marijuana pipe or ‘bong’ surfaced in an English tabloid newspaper.
The image sent shockwaves through the swimming world as it was plastered across newspaper, the internet and television last month.

County Sheriff of Richland Leon Lott was quick to advise the media that Phelps did in fact face serious criminal charges and that he, along with the District Attorney’s office would seek to prosecute Phelps to the full extent of the law if found guilty.
However, having thoroughly investigated the matter, Lott stated that there was not enough evidence to prosecute the superstar (or in fact anyone else at the party) and that it could not be proven that Phelps had in fact smoke marijuana, despite the fact that star openly admitted he had made a mistake.
The swimmer was quick to apologise to fans and fellow athletes following the surfacing of humiliating image and declared he had made a terrible error in judgement.
Phelps, who won an unprecedented eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics, elevating him to the status of the greatest Olympian of all time, has received a three month suspension from competing in any swim meet from the United States swimming governing body.
The star swimmer is also said to have lost a lucrative contract with Kellogg’s who were quick to pull the pin on a sponsorship deal despite many other of Phelp’s sponsors sticking by him.

In a sensational about face, disgraced swimmer Nick D’Arcy has pleaded guilty to the assault of former swimmer and Commonwealth Games Gold medalist Simon Cowley.
Directly after the incident, defense for D’Arcy clearly stated that the champion butterflier would be defending the charge of assault occasional grievous bodily harm but in today’s preliminary hearing, D’Arcy defense team entered a guilty plea.

D’Arcy’s spectacular fall from grace came literally just hours after qualifying for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
It is alleged that following the swim meet, D’Arcy and fellow team mates were out celebrating at a popular night spot when Cowley approached Nick D’Arcy and was punched to the ground – leaving him with a fractured eye socket, soft palette, cheekbone and nose.
Despite entering a guilty plea, defense for D’Arcy maintains that it was Cowley who initiated the violent altercation by slapping D’Arcy across the face.
Apparently D’Arcy then left the scene only to be followed by Cowley.
Fearing a further strike, D’Arcy countered with one punch to the face of Cowley that sent him reeling and caused the extent of his injuries.
Details of the incident are still shady but what remains clear is that D’Arcy forfeited quite possibly a once in a lifetime opportunity to represent his country with a single instant of madness.
Cowley is still being rehabilitated for his injuries and will have five titanium plates permanently embedded in his face.
D’Arcy’s sentence hearing will take place on the 20th of February, 2009.
