The Greg Bird saga continues at Cronulla after the NRL yet again postponed any and all decision making for the Test and New South Wales five eighth.

Four months ago the Cronulla star made headlines when his then girlfriend was admitted to hospital with a fractured eye socket following a n alleged glassing incident at their Cronulla residence.

Although charges were laid against Bird, his girlfriend did an about face just a few days later pleading with the courts for charges to dropped.

The charges were subsequently downgraded to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and two counts of lying to police in the aftermath of the incident.

Cronulla executives immediately stood Bird down and suspended him from training pending an investigation into the incident and it has since been reported that they were planning to sack him as early as last month.

However, legal documentation from the players association saved Bird from the axe and the club will now have to wait until a verdict is handed down following a court appearance on April 27th 2009.

Until such time, Bird remains on the payroll but will not take the field in the light blue Cronulla jersey until he has been cleared of any wrongdoing,

Should he be found guilty, Cronulla is likely to terminate his four year contract and de- list him, leaving the door open for English Super League side Warrington (who has already shown interest) to sign him.

The Gold Coast Blaze backed up their first win of the season with a hard-fought loss to ladder leaders the South Dragons last Saturday night while the Sydney Spirit challenged the Melbourne Tigers and led late in the third term before the Tigers took control, eventually prevailing 98-80.

The Spirit’s chances of registering their fifth win of the season were dealt a blow by the loss of underrated guard Liam Rush, who scored a game-high 27 points when these two sides met in round four.

More pressure will now be on import Derrick Low to fire and lift his side to a much needed win while the Spirit will also need Jason Smith to have an impact – a big ask considering this is just his second match back after a long layoff thanks to a shoulder injury.

When these two sides met earlier in the year James Harvey and Shane Heal were damaging for the Blaze, scoring 24 and 20 points respectively.

Rob Beveridge’s men will need to deny the aforementioned duo the time and space to get an open look otherwise they will be consigned to their ninth loss of the season.

In the previous clash between these two sides the Spirit dominated the boards – they had 20 offensive rebounds.

On a sadder note, team CSC Saxo Bank teammate and Olympian Brad McGee called it quits after a long and successful career at the top.

McGee was elated to see teammate O’Grady get up in Australia’s oldest tour event.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. Just when you thought it was safe for South Sydney to think their season was back on track – think again. They have suffered their 4th straight loss this weekend to Manly and their mammoth efforts of 2007 look to be well and truely extinct at this stage of 2008.

This is a tough one. It seems as though the Titans have close to a full strength team this week and will be very very keen to come away with a win at home. The Tigers are due to slow down a bit and could get a shock on the coast. The Titans to win.

North Queensland Cowboys vs Canberra Raiders

Both of these teams are on the cusp of the Top 8. The Cowboys are not showing they have much this season – their forwards are letting them down. If Canberra can stop their attack, the game will be there for the taking for them. Expect this to be very close with perhaps the Raiders to win.

Penrith Panthers vs South Sydney Rabbitohs
2.10 vs 1.75
The Rabbits need to continue their winning forum and the Panthers really need a win. But all is not well within the Panthers club and one would expect Souths to get up here. But just when you least expect it, teams have been winning this season – Penrith to just get up.

Sydney Roosters vs NZ Warriors
2.65 vs 1.50
Rooster have been flying high but it’s time to drop back to earth. This will be a very closely fought match especially on the Roosters home turf. The Warriors are a better side, but will they turn up?

Brisbane Broncos vs Manly Sea Eagles
2.55 vs 1.53
The Broncos still have much to prove this season. They never looked like being beaten against the Sharks last week and so they still remain in the hunt to defend the title. But the Sea Eagles are a tough team to tackle this year and will probably get up here. Want to have a bet? Brisbane at +6 points is a chance.

Cronulla Sharks vs Melbourne Storm
4.05 vs 1.25
Melbourne will spank the Sharks. 1.25 is good going and even take them at -10.5 if you want. This is a laydown (we hope!)

This battle of the cellar dwellers is sure to send most of us to sleep on paper, but we expect this to be an entertaining match. The Panthers have lots to play for because the last thing they would want is the wooden spoon. NZ Warriors vs Newcastle Knights

The Warriors are on fire right now and it won’t be changing this week. It’s tough for a team to come away from NZ with a win, and the likes of Newcastle will struggle to do that this week. The Warriors all the way!

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Gold Coast Titans

This will be a tight match up – lucky for the Rabbits that they are at home. The Titans need to get their season back on track but injuries are preventing that. South Sydney to win and they will restrict the Titans to a low score.

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Bulldogs

The Dragons are back in town and looking to make the finals. We think they will surprise the Bulldogs this week – who are the most overrated side in the comp?

Brisbane Boncos vs Cronulla Sharks

The Broncos can still finish the season well and they proved last week against the Eels that they can still match it without their big names. This will be a close match but Brisbane will win.

Parramatta Eels vs Manly Sea Eagles

It’s traditionally tough to win in North Queensland, but the Warriors’ defense is up for the challenge and we feel New Zealand will get up in this one.

Manly Sea Eagles vs Sydney Roosters

The Sea Eagles need a win and this is the game to do it in. The Rooster will be looking to turn their fortunes around, but don’t expect it in this match.

St George Illawarra vs Canberra Raiders

Canberra are a great price for this match up. The Dragons will be resting on their unexpected win of last week and will have trouble beating the Raiders here. Canberra to win or safety in the +7.5 line.

Cronulla Sharks vs Bulldogs

Bulldogs finding form – Cronulla losing it. This game could seriously go either way – we’ll take the value in the Sharks, thank you very much.

The Eels are hitting their straps and should get up against the Knights. Warning though, if they are off their game at all the Knights will sneak home.

What are your thoughts on the State Of Origin 3 match? It seems as though all of the money keeps coming for Queensland, but it could certainly be closer than expected. The current odds are:

The line is around 6 points in favour of NSW. Whatever way you look at this match, Queensland should be favourites. They have a proven side that is willing to go the extra distance to win the game. This is a really interesting match up. The Roosters shouldn’t have won last week and the Eels have been up and down. 2.63 for the Roosters is good value.

The Titans have been tough to beat all season. This will be a tight match but expect the Gold Coast to win at home.

The Roosters have been improving and could have sprung an upset before losing a couple of key players this week. Panthers to win.

St George (4.00) vs Brisbane (1.25) – The Broncos had their biggest ever win against Newcastle last week (71-6) and they showed they don’t belong on the bottom of the table. One win doesn’t fix all of their problems however, and will they be ready to beat the Dragons this week? On paper, the match is over, but St George could surprise. Brisbane to win in a close encounter.

Sydney (1.40) vs Newcastle (3.00) – The Sydney Roosters had a wonderful victory against Cronulla last week. We suggested last week that the match would be close while everyone else said the Roosters would be beaten easily. The Roosters defense has been very impressive recently, while the Newcastle Knights have been terrible. Expect the Roosters to dominate this match, even with the return of Danny Buderus for the Knights.

Melbourne (1.16) vs South Sydney (5.25) – The Melbourne Storm home ground has been dubbed ‘The Graveyard’ recently. It’s tough to win there. Souths need to improve if they are to even get close. Melbourne to smack the Bunnies.

North Queensland (1.50) vs Cronulla (2.60) – The Nth Qld Cowboys put it to the Bulldogs last week, and they are tough to beat at home. Cronulla need to put last week behind them and start over. North Queensland to win by 6.

Gold Coast (1.55) vs Canberra (2.45) – Canberra have impressed recently, while the Titans had a very scrappy win last week. This will be a tight match. Our tip here is Canberra by 2.

New Zealand (1.82) vs Canterbury (2.00) – The Warriors continue to go bad away from home. Even at home recently they have struggled. Canterbury will not be happy with giving up a home game to play Nth Qld in Brisbane last week and going down. They finished that match off well and will be looking to continue that into their NZ game. Bulldogs to win.

Wests (1.80) vs Parramatta (2.00) – Wests just held on last week against Penrith, while the Eels impressed. For Parra, this will be a tough match to back up into. It’s a split decision and we’ll go with the Wests Tigers based on their home ground advantage.
