By Monday afternoon Ben Cousins will know if he has a career playing for the Richmond Tigers Football Club.

Up until this point, the AFL has left all decision making as to whether or not they will select Cousins to play for them in the draft up to the individual club.

However, Richmond has thrown a proverbial spanner in the works by putting the decision squarely back on the AFL by asking them to approve the placing of Graeme Polak on the rookies list as opposed to the injured players list.

Polak suffered near fatal head injuries when a Tram struck him earlier this year.

Polak’s injuries included potential brain damage and the full extent of the is still not know, hence the Tiger’s uncertainty as to whether or not he will play next season.

If the AFL does approve Polak’s move to the rookie list, it will open up a vital extra pick in the draft, which would almost certainly see cousins wearing the blask and gold in 2009.

After publicly declaring last week that they were interested in drafting Cousins, much to the delight of fans and potential backers, the Tigers have made somewhat of an about face but not openly stating that they would do anything in their power to draft him.

The Richmond administration seem to have had an attack of the nerves over the weekend with regard to the clubs image, asking the AFL to sanction the draft to tie up any loose ends or quash any ill feeling from other clubs.

Fans of veteran forward Scott Lucas will rejoice after Bombers coach Matthew Knights has told Lucas that there will not be a use-by-date on his career, but will depends on how valuable he remains to the club and team.

Lucas turns 31 this year, and is currently on a one year contract with the club, and has expressed his inking to extend his long standing career of 13 years with the club.

Whether that will happen or not may not be up to Lucas or anyone else, as he has been plagued with many knee and back problems that has him only participating in nine games, that is compared to him not missing a single game in the previous three seasons. That said, it appears that the club’s medical staff were happy with his recovery and already have Lucas back on doing game style drills. Given his current state of progress, he might be ready for Round 1. Although he may recovery, knee and back problems remains persistently recurring and may continue to trip the left footer.

Regardless, given his record and temperament, he may get to stay on to mentor and develop the young blood in the club, such as forwards Jay Neagle and Scott Gumbleton. Regardless of his future role, Lucas is confident that the group is able to make it ahead, after finishing twelfth with eight wins last season, even with a new game strategy in use.

As for fans like me, I am for seasoned players like Lucas to remain, for even when they are playing at their 80%, their presence and foresight given to the team is much more valuable than their actual contribution, and that said, even at 80%, Lucas still play some pretty good football.

Disgraced former West Coast Eagles captain Ben Cousins has been thrown the most unlikely of lifelines just when he thought his bid to make a return to professional football was all but over.

After being passed up by St. Kilda, Brisbane and Melbourne, as well as being openly snubbed by almost every other club I the league, rumour has it that Cousins ahs been in negotiations with the Richmond club.

New Tiger man and AFL legend Kevin Sheedy has been credited with engineering the possible acquisition after talking to Cousins and the Richmond management.

Sheedy stated that he believes everyone deserves a second chance and after a one on one meeting with Cousins he was convinced that the thirty year old midfielder was genuine not only about his rehabilitation, but a comeback to elite football.

Cousins is said to have met with Tiger coach Terry Wallace during the week to discuss the possibility of drafting.

The intended move has ruffled a few feathers – particularly black an white ones.

Eddie McGuire had plenty to say about the decision given that in order to draft Cousins, Richmond will need to give up a draft pick.

They have also moved Graeme pPolak who was hit by a tram earlier in the year to the rookie list meaning he will not count as a listed player for the early part of the season making way for Cousins.

The ruling was deemed fair by most but others, like McGuire feel an injustice has been done.

If your blood is blue then you are probably still celebrating Carlton’s impressive win over Collingwood at the MCG over the weekend.

Well the rivalry round certainly lived up to expectations this week with a phenomenal match between Port and the Crows.

Let’s get the bad news out of the way first. Essendon have suffered a massive blow during their 55 point thumping of the Kangaroos with Scott Lucas set to miss at least half the season with a knee injury. Hawthorn defender Trent Croad is also nervously awaiting the outcome of tests this week to determine how long he will be benched after dislocating his wrist against Melbourne. Another casualty of round 1 is Brent Reilly from the Adelaide Crows who will miss at least six weeks after breaking his wrist in the last quarter of their match against the Western Bulldogs. To add insult to this injury, the Crows lost the game by three points after Reilly took the bench.
Winners are grinners and this week Hawthorn, Essendon, Richmond, Collingwood, West Coast, Geelong, St Kilda and the Bulldogs all came up trumps.
