Footy tipping is a favourite past time of many Australians regardless of which code you follow and as methods of training and coaching evolve, facilities improve and systems such as the salary cap and the national draft take effect, it becomes more and more difficult each year.

Trying to tip the Australian Football League (AFL) recently has been some what of a nightmare as the almighty Geelong team show signs of weakness, St Kilda finally loses to massive underdogs and the bottom placed teams show signs of improvement.

Aside from that, there have been three draws his year which will spoil a perfect round every time (who has the guts to tip a draw in the AFL) sparking claims for extra time to be introduced to the regular season in 2010.

There are, however, many ways to improve your chance of tipping successfully in the AFL.

For starters it is always important to keep abreast of all the AFL news including injuries, suspensions and inner turmoil within a club. Another excellent source of information whilst trying to work out the best team tip in an AFL fixture are web sites that offer statistics on teams listing everything from current and past form, recent clashes, handballs, kicks, points and much more.

Last, but certainly not least, online book makers are a great source of information on which to base your weekly AFL tips and to prepare you to bet on AFL . They make a business out of deciding who they think will win and providing appropriate odds based on the information they have analysed.

They will generally have a fair idea of who to tip week in and week out in the AFL.

Just when you thought the 2009 Australian Football League premiership season was cut and dry, another upset or two and a clinical display from an unbeaten St Kilda has made sure that AFL online sports betting will go right down to the wire this season.

Sure, when Geelong plays Melbourne (even though Geelong had lost two in a row and Melbourne won two) it’s a no brainer to tip the cats over the struggling Dees but when Adelaide takes the field with a chance against the Saints only to be thrashed it makes life difficult.

Carlton continue their erratic form with a win over the Sydney Swans to keep their finals aspirations well and truly alive and the Hawks continue to give those involved in AFL tipping competitions nightmares by winning games they were not necessarily expected to win.

AFL tipping will only get harder this week with a number of other crucial matches as teams eye a spot in the final eight while some desperately hope to maintain a spot in the top four.

Some teams just on to get through the season and focus on next year – such as Fremantle and West Coast who play at Subiaco which is nearly impossible to tip.

First place St Kilda take on third placed Western Bulldogs in another tight encounter while old foes Collingwood and Carlton to battle at the MCG this Friday.

Tipping against Carlton would be brave given their recent history against the Pies.

Other crucial matches this week that could prove difficult in tipping circles are the Geelong v Hawthorn Grand Final replay (no 2) Essendon v Richmond and Adelaide v Port in a week that all AFL tipping pundits dread – rivalry round.

AFL Tipping: There is little doubt that tipping has been easier as the season has gone on. But, it remains a challenge for us all; no matter how much you may know about AFL tipping.

Aside from the top-two teams, who can be tipped without thought, the rest has become a lottery, as the competition remains even. The old rule of always picking the home team came back to bite those who tipped Brisbane against Port Adelaide.

Yet Carlton rebounded with a hard-fought win over Fremantle in the West. Hawthorn was pumped by the Western Bulldogs, while Collingwood score an expected win over Essendon and St.Kilda is the only undefeated team in the competition after conquering Geelong.

They say good tipping online, or with your friends, can be based on history. Geelong had a 12-0 record at the Docklands since 2007 before the loss. History did not repeat.

So where do you go from here? Good tipping comes down to research and, more often than not, your “gut” feel. Take a look at the odds each week, at Sportingbet, Centrebet and IASbet.com. View the teams, the statistics and recent records.

But, while this may sound contradictory, don’t over think the process. Think of it as a two-horse race. Tipping is a challenge. How do you know which Port Adelaide will turn up? Or when Hawthorn will rediscover their mojo?

AFL Tipping: Western Bulldogs V Collingwood – Both teams are in super form at present. Collingwood, with a full team on the park, is impressing all and sundry. But doubt remains over its ability to conquer the better teams. Dogs by 15 points.

Sydney Swans V Essendon – Sydney plays its home ground to perfection and will look to shut down Essendon’s running game. The Bombers, though, are coming off a loss and may have too much pace for the Swans. Essendon by 11 points in a low-scoring contest.

Carlton V Richmond – Carlton should win this match if it aspires to play finals. The bookmakers will install them as clear favourites, but it won’t be easy. Carlton by 8 points.

Brisbane Lions V Geelong – The Lions at home are a tough proposition, but they will be confronting a Geelong side keen to atone for last week’s loss to St.Kilda. Brisbane will have a good season, but they are not in Geelong’s league yet. Cats by 33 points.
Adelaide V Fremantle – The Crows are the certainty of the round. Will have too many guns all over the field for Freo to cover. Adelaide by 44 points.

Hawthorn V North Melbourne – Surely the reigning premier will come out with all guns blazing after an embarrassing loss. Lose this game and finals can be forgotten. Hawthorn by 17 points in a tough battle.

Melbourne V Port Adelaide – The question is which Port Adelaide will turn up? Still, the Power should have too much for the Demons and win by 35 points.

West Coast V St.Kilda – The Saints will make it 15 in a row in the West. Not much more needs to be said. St.Kilda by 19 points.

AFL Tipping: So how many of you started the AFL tipping season off full of enthusiasm? By now, you would know if you’re in the running for an end-of-season prize or not. The results have been friendlier for tipsters recently but it’s amazing how many games are played, week-by-week, that divide tipsters – even though we are 14 rounds into the season.

To find out the latest AFL Tips click here!

Six tips would have been a good result last weekend. Collingwood did what was expected and beat Essendon, but not everyone was so keen on Melbourne defeating the Eagles. While the Demons are headed for a wooden-spoon, West Coast had lost its past 17 away from home before the game. That is inexcusable and, in reality, the $2.20 odds on Melbourne were fantastic value. It’s likely that this game cost you a good round but, really, if you look at recent-history, it shouldn’t have.

Port Adelaide is a dangerous team for tipsters. It beat Brisbane easily, and unexpectedly, by 48 points. The Power were in the comforts of home though, and the old rule is to, when in doubt, tip the home team. The Western Bulldogs were always going to defeat the Hawks. The Dogs are one of the form teams of the competition and the result was never in doubt. Ditto Adelaide over Richmond.

To Bet on NRL click the link!

Sydney would have made many tipsters nervous with a close-win over North Melbourne, while Carlton conjured a superb come-from-behind win away from home against Fremantle. In the match of the round, tipsters remain none the wiser, with St.Kilda defeating Geelong by a goal. Just who is the best team in the competition remains unanswered for tipsters.

The Bulldogs sit in second place and look the goods to take two points over the Panthers who will struggle with two of their top players out.

The Roosters have firmed as wooden spoon favourites following off field dramas and terrible form and should be no match for the ever consistent North Queensland outfit despite them missing play maker Jonathon Thurstans.

AFL footy tipping online has become very popular, which could have easily been foreseen with the popularity of the sport and the increased use of the internet. Several websites have great AFL tipping sections that make it easy for AFL fans and punters to place bets on football games.

Collingwood V Fremantle – If the Magpies have top-four aspirations, then they will not drop this one against a Fremantle outfit which has struggled this season. Tip Collingwood to get its fifth win in a row.

Adelaide V Sydney – The Crows are in white-hot form and will account for the struggling Swans at home. No game is easy against Sydney, but Adelaide has the edge in class and will prevail.

Brisbane V Melbourne – One word: Brisbane. The Lions are developing nicely under Michael Voss and will win this game easily.

West Coast V Hawthorn – Two teams out-of-form, yet one of them has the ability to get out of their slumber. The Hawks need to win this game, otherwise their finals hopes could be in the casualty ward. There is too much at stake for the reigning premier.

Geelong V Port Adelaide – The Cats at home are, almost, unbeatable. They will win this clash over the hit-and-miss Port Adelaide. Geelong simply has too many stars for the injury-riddled Power to cover.

North Melbourne V Western Bulldogs – Could North deliver caretaker coach Darren Crocker a victory in his first game in the head chair? Tipsters should not think so. The Bulldogs are in super form and the Kangaroos have a number of injuries – not a good outlook if you are a North fan.

St. Kilda V Richmond – Saints will win this clash easily if they are serious. Will win their 13th in succession and set-up a mouth-watering clash with Geelong the following week.

The previous weekend saw few surprises and almost no changes in the overall standings after a cold and wet weekend meant some teams struggled to score while others showed their class in any conditions.

Friday night football come to you live from Etihad Stadium as two of the oldest teams in the AFL do battle.

The Essendon Bombers host the cellar dwellers the Melbourne Demons in an all out grudge match that should see plenty of fire and big hits.

Essendon have been consistently inconsistent this year with big wins and shock losses while the Demons are stuck in first gear at the bottom of the table.

Any punter would be a fool to tip against the Bombers in this encounter and after a sixty point loss to Collingwood last week, the Demons will almost certainly not measure up.

The Sydney Swans host Collingwood in a classic encounter at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night and history dictates that the Magpies should have little trouble overcoming their opponents.

Sydney fans have been disappointed to see Collingwood take the points not only in regular season fixtures, but two back to back finals appearances and they will do well to suppress the Pies who have won three on the trot while the Swans Languish outside the top eight.

To finish off the split round, Fremantle travel to Geelong to meet the almost unbeatable cats at Skilled Stadium.

Despite winning by just one point in the same encounter last year, Geelong are deservingly $1.06 favourites at home on a Sunday arvo so this one is a no brainer.

AFL online tipping has never been easier and more rewarding as plenty of media companies are getting in on the action this year.

For the most part footy tipping has been traditionally a friendly (and at times not so friendly) show down between loyal fans who try to match wits to see who know the most about their beloved game.

Generally these tipping competitions would take place in offices, workplaces and pubs around the nation but with the trend towards online media, becoming part of an AFL footy tipping competition is as easy as logging onto the internet.

Three of the most popular footy tipping competitions running at the moment are the National Australia Bank tipping competition which runs through the Telstra Bigpond official AFL web site.

Entry is free to anyone who thinks they stand a chance of outwitting quite literally tens of thousands of other tipsters who believe they hold they key to picking a winner.

Other sites that offer great prizes for tipping competitions include the Herald Sun website which traditionally runs a fantastic tipping competition every year and is one of the leading sources of AFL news in Victoria and in fact Australia.

Although The Age is not know as the greatest supporter of sports and so called tabloid journalism, they cannot help but offer loyal readers the chance to get in on the action.

Whether you follow all the footy news and watch every game with baited breath, or whether your just a weekend warrior who fancies their luck against the so called experts, there are dozens of online tipping competitions that are free to enter and offer great rewards.

Afl Round 9 Show Downs

By round nine the AFL should have well and truly worked itself out with clear front runners and clubs who are going to struggle.

For AFL betting online click here!

Although Geelong and St Kilda have stamped their respective authorities as the teams to beat, there is still a tight tussle amongst the next ten or so teams for control of the middle order.

After just six rounds one win separates thirteenth placed Brisbane and third placed Carlton and come round nine punters and fans will have a better idea of which teams are the real deal in 2009.

Round nine sees Geelong take on the Western Bulldogs who despite being tipped to give them a real run for their money late last year were completely outclassed and embarrassed. It was a sad (or wonderful in some cases) moment for AFL tipping online. North Melbourne are in real danger of missing the eight after skipper Brett Harvey was sidelined for eight weeks after a sickening elbow injury on the weekend.

They will take on the struggling Fremantle who managed a big win (their first) over the Swans in round 5.

Two teams that have showed promise this year are Carlton and Adelaide and come round nine it will be no surprise to see them both jostling for a position in the top for as the clash at AAMI Stadium.

Collingwood have been red hot and ice cold this year and despite having the star studded line up and a pack of brilliant youngsters just have not found the rhythm they are looking for.

They may just struggle against West Coast in Subiaco who have shown signs of improvement following a horror season last year.

Hawthorn will look to push into the eight as they take on cellar dwellers Melbourne while St Kilda should make easy work of a Lions outfit that have not shown the form Coach Michael Voss was hoping for.

Port travel to Sydney for a tough assignment against the Swans at home while Richmond will look to give fans something to cheer about in their local derby against the Bombers.

Make sure you get your bet on NRL or AFL tips in before the upcoming games this weekend!

A crowd of more that ninety five thousand spilled into the Melbourne Cricket ground, many clutching their AFL tips, for what is widely regarded as the biggest game of the year outside the grand final. Ensure you bet on AFL online for the next game as it’s sure to be another corker!

The Bombers got off to a slow start after Anthony Rocca kicked the fist goal of the match which was compounded by second from the Pies to see them take a healthy opening lead.

However score were nearly level at the first break and were locked at forty two all at the main change – the crowd expecting a grand stand finish and they certainly were not disappointed.

In one of the scrappiest games of the year, it was remarkable to see the skill level improve after the heavens opened in the final quarter and, leading by thirteen points with less than five minutes to go in the belting rain, the Magpies looked home.

It was not to be and the black and white army watched on in disbelief as Essendon kicked one, then two goals to remarkably be down by a single point. The AFL tipping online websites were full to bursting with forum comments on this remarkable game.

With less than thirty seconds on the clock the ball fell to debutante and new ANZAC day hero David Zaharakis who despite being knocked off balance slotted a wobbly drop punt from forty five metres out to seal a memorable victory for the Bombers.

If this excitement is just too much to handle, why not try a bet on NRL online instead.

With so many options, no longer should we just rely on ‘regular’ tipping. We have more to experience than that. Take the Herald Sun’s online SuperTipping for example. It has the traditional tipping system, but it also boasts ‘weighted tipping’, which takes into account the odds for matches from TAB Sportsbet.

For example, if St.Kilda is listed at a $3.30 chance to defeat Geelong and you correctly tip the Saints, you earn 3.3 points, instead of one. If you fancy yourself as someone who can pick an upset, this competition could be for you and you should have a bet on AFL.

TAB Sportsbet’s Million Dollar Tipping was also launched this year, offering weekly prizes for tipping eight winners and end-of-season prizes. It also demands you select a winning margin for your selected team in the first match of each round. Get it right and you earn bonus points.
With the AFL season, so far, littered with upsets, this is where you can build your points. Taking calculated gambles, and landing them, can be richly rewarded in online tipping competitions. But there is always someone who seems to get these near-impossible tips right – can this be you?

Most competitions online are free to enter. Others who run competitions include the AFL website, Centrebet, The Footy Show and Fox Sports.

This weekend proved a nightmare for some punters but a cake walk for others as the Saints and the Cats flogged their opponents while cellar dwellers Richmond and Fremantle both notched up their first wins of the season over North Melbourne and Sydney respectively.

The ANZAC result proved to be about as effective as flipping a coin as the game was decided in the dying seconds in favour of the Bombers which was a disappointment to many who bet on AFL for this game.

In a weekend that saw some dismally low scores, reigning premiers Hawthorn survived a scare against 2008 easy beats the West Coast Eagles while Adelaide edged out the lowly Melbourne Demons by 17 points in a match that saw less a dozen goals kicked and the Dees notch up just three points to half time.

Carlton gave ailing club stalwart Richard Pratt the perfect present by thumping the Bulldogs by forty three points which saw the Doggies slide out of favour with punters and the Blues firm a little.

AFL Update from IASBet

AFL Aussie Rules No Comments

The Richmond Tigers have suffered a nightmare defeat at the hands of the Carlton Blues overnight after not only were they comprehensively thrashed, but their star recruit Ben Cousins broke down in the final quarter with a hamstring tear that could very well be season ending.

To bet on AFL sports online at IASBet.com.au click here!

The astounding thing is that club medics spent the majority of the third quarter break massaging and assessing Cousin’s left hamstring.

While running the ball out of defence, Cousins took a bounce then dropped like a sack of spuds and hobbled from the field.

Despite taking just twelve seconds to gain his first touch in AFL football since he was suspended from the game in disgrace, the former Brownlow medallist managed just another ten touches and did little to trouble the Carlton.

Carlton’s pressure was evident early and a huge 52 point first quarter put them in a nearly unreachable position.

Every time the Tigers got a sniff, inaccurate kicking on their behalf coupled with some brilliance on the part of Judd, Fevola and Betts saw the Blues pile on the points in the third term and put the result well and truly beyond doubt.

Betts booted five goals while Judd snared a pair of brilliant goals to well and truly overshadow his former West Coast Eagles team mate. This should greatly improve your online bet on NRL and AFL with IASBet as moments like these don’t come around often.

The Blues looked ominous and the combination of Judd and Fevola, who at times could be seen laughing and joking on the sideline together during spells, will leave Carlton fans salivating at the possibility of playing football come September for the first time in nearly ten years. AFL Update

AFL Aussie Rules No Comments

AFL -In somewhat typical fashion the Collingwood Magpies look to take their umpiring complaints straight to the top after what they believe was a disgraceful display from umpires during their round one loss to Adelaide on Saturday.

To bet onAFL click here!

It is no secret that Collingwood Coach Mick Malthouse has a pronounced lack of faith in umpiring boss Jeff Gieschen so he will be looking to take his complaints directly to AFL Chief Executive Andrew Demetriou.

When asked if they would be taking their complaints any further following the post match press conference, the Pies made it clear that they would not be approaching Gieschen and motioned that this would be as far as they would take the complaints.

However it is believed that Collingwood coaching staff are preparing a case to present to Demetriou as early as tonight.

Immediately following the game, Malthouse left the blame squarely with the skill level of his players and made no mention of the umpiring.

It is believed that the Magpies are not so much as lodging a complaint against any specific umpiring decision, rather looking for a ‘please explain’ regarding some umpires interpretations of new rules.

The penalty count stood at a fairly even 18 – 14 in favour of the Crowes and an Adelaide Official was bemused at the Pies reaction to the umpiring.

He stated that although there were seemingly a few dubious decisions that went in favour of the Crowes towards the end of the game, there were another few that went the other way throughout the course of the match.

Malthouse was also heard to state games cannot be one and lost on the strength of individual umpiring decisions and that the skill level of the players should ultimately decide the outcome – something his players were apparently lacking.

France has a good chance of talking a step towards reaching next year’s World Cup as it has success against Lithunia. Franck Ribery’s contribution in Kaunas on a bumpy pitch has helped paved a smoother path for France towards South Africa 2010.

Spain managed to get a small win over the Turks by 1-0 with a hard won goal from Gerald Pique. The Turks held their fort well before succumbing the one goal of the game.

The infamously pampered team of England has been put on the bench. The Chelsea midfielder says it’s about time that England’s underachievers were given a slap on their wrist and a reality check to wake them up.

Nab Challenge Melbourne Vs Cairns

AFL Aussie Rules No Comments

The much missed Lions captain Jonathan Brown is likely to have his first game in 2009 in the NAB Challenge match against Melbourne at Cairns. The 27 year old has been out of the scene for some time after his hip injury.

Injured mid fielder said that his captain is looking good and has been out with the main group for the last three weeks and is getting the spring in his foot back, which is really motivating for the rest of the team, given that the Lions has its fair share of injuries.

BET NOW

Brown’s inclusion in the lineup will definitely make a strong team stronger. The Lions beat St Kilda and went within two points of winning Essendon. There has been many high profile absences, mostly due to injuries. Big names, star players such as Brown, Simon Black, Jamie Charman, Jared Brennan, Luke Power, Michael Rischitelli and Travis Johnstone all missed matches in the season.

It’ll be interesting to see who gets to fill the places as these big names come back. It can be certain that competition for places will definitely be fierce.

The Lions appeared to be well prepared, especially in the scorching weather of Cairns. After a long hot pre season, the tough conditions in Cairns should not be an issue for the Lions, who will be clashing with the Demons this Friday on 06 March 2009.

The Lions hasn’t been in a finals game since 2004, and this season, they seem to be well on track to break the dry spell.

AFL Aussie Rules No Comments

www.sportingbet.com.au – Both the Brisbane Broncos and the Melbourne Storm have named star studded line ups for there pre season clash to take place on the Gold Coast this Sunday.

Brisbane have decided to trot out champion five-eighth Darren Lockyer despite earlier plans to keep him in cotton wool until the club’s NRL season opener against North Queensland on March 13.

BET NOW

Lockyer, who has thrived at training in recent weeks, expressed a desire last week to rid himself of any rust and nerves with an unscheduled hit-out before the season kicks off next month.

Despite playing more than 300 games for Brisbane, he still prefers to release any nervous tension and get some timing and confidence under his belt with a trial before the season kicked off.

Youngster Gerard Beale, one of the many stars of Brisbane’s under 20 side last season, has been named as Karmichael Hunt’s replacement as the Test custodian recovers from a minor abdominal muscle tear.

And rookie coach Ivan Henjak has stuck with young speedsters Jharal Yow Yeh and Antonio Winterstein on the wings as a reward for strong trial performances against the Gold Coast and Canberra which have boosted their NRL stocks.

Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy meanwhile delivered on a promise to field his best possible line-up with the likes of Slater, Inglis, Cooper Cronk, Ryan Hoffman, Dallas Johnson and exciting talents Willie Isa and Will Chambers sure to pack out Stockland Park.www.sportingbet.com.au

AFL Clubs

AFL Aussie Rules No Comments

AFL clubs have come under scruitiny for alledgedly charging what can only be described as exorbidant amounts of money for photographs of stars with the general public – or even just by themselves.

In reports revealed this week, it has come to the attention of the public through the media that clubs are charging as much as $25 ( for Lance ‘Buddy’ Franklin) just for a happy snap with a supporters favourite player.

BET NOW

Club legends have come to the defence of the so called outegeous prices stating that football clubs have to cover the costs of everything from socks, to mouthgaurds and sponsorship doesn;t always make ends meet.

Rarely does the cash go directly to the player himself, rather is recycled back into the club.

This is the general idea behind ‘supporting’ a football club – not only do you go fo a team, but you get behind them financially.

Without memberships, memorabilia, sporting wear etc. clubs could not exist on sponsorship alone – given the record amounts players receive both in salaries and endorsements.

If a supporter is willing to pay say five, ten or even twenty five dollars for a photo with their favourite plkayer, a keepsake that they will have with them forever, and as long as the money is used to support the club, then it shouldn;t matter what the cost – as long as it’s in the spirit of keeping football alive and well.

NAB cup

AFL Aussie Rules No Comments

The NAB cup kicked off over the weekend and there were not to many surprises as Collingwood thrashed the West Coast Eagles who are still very much in a rebuilding phase.

West Coast coach John Worsfold had praise for his charges despite being overrun and overawed by a promising looking Collingwood outfit.

West Coast looked every bit the cellar dwellers of last 2008 but blooded a number of young recruits and definitely now have some direction.

Collingwood’s Ben Johnson played only two thirds of the game and still nearly took out a best on ground performance as he racked up possessions along centre half back and still managed to kick a couple of goals.

PLAY NOW

Johnson sighted the strongest pre-season build up since he debuted at the club for the side’s impressive win.

More promising signs for the Pies included a strong return to football for the suspended Heath Shaw and Alan Didak who infamously were involved in a drink driving incident last year that nearly saw them delisted.

Both players pledged there support for to the black and white army and have seemingly repaid the faith with strong preparation.

Prominent performances from Dane Swan, Scott Pendlebury and Tarkyn Lockyer will also have magpie fans smiling though the impending three match suspension of new skipper Nick Maxwell will not.

Maxwell has been charged with making front on contact with Eagles player Patrick McGinnity that left him with a broken jaw.

If found guilty, Maxwell could face up to four weeks out of the game after he challenged the ruling.

ST Kilda Line Up

AFL Aussie Rules No Comments

Fans of Sam Fisher may see the St Kilda defender in a different position in this year’s new seasons as St Kilda has a fresh influx of defenders in the off season. The club’s best made the All Australian team last year after playing in the absence of Matt Maguire who was injured. But with Maguire making a recovery and comeback, plus the addition of backmen Colm Begley and Farren Ray, it appears that Fisher will play the cameo roles that he is familiar with.

BET NOW

The St Kilda’s club champion performance has been impressive so far, averaging almost 14 kicks and nine marks a game last year. Fisher is ranked third in the AFL for rebound 50′s and third overall for for marks after chalking a tally of 192 grabs. Fisher ousted Riewoldth 680 to 643 votes to win the coveted award.

St Kilda managed to finish within the top four last year, but regardless, the club still has a long way to go after heavy losses to Hawthorn and Geelong. But with a lot of young guys and new players, 2009 looks promising for the club as they try to close the gap, albeit the improvements has to be from the new players. The club signed up seven rookie players at the end of 2008. That said, the Saints do have many experienced and senior players that can assist the new blood which hopefully will see exponential progress in this season’s games.

That said, the Saints young gun Raphael Clarke will be someone to look out for in the new season, who deserving took the most promising award last year.
