2009 National Rugby League
February 24, 2009 11:00 am Rugby League NRLThe 2009 National Rugby League season is stepping up a notch as the opening game of the season approaches after a long and hot pre-season.
The world of NRL has miraculously remained relatively scandal free for the duration of the off season and appears that professional rugby league players are more committed to the personal and club success than ever before.
In the lead up to round one of the 2009 season, many players have come out of the blocks early, vowing that this could be the fastest, toughest most exciting season yet.
Wendell Sailor, who made a remarkable return to the NRL last year for the St George Illawarra Dragons after switching to Rugby Union where, after a successful Super 14’s and Test career was banned from playing after testing positive to cocaine, added to this sentiment when he stated that the Dragons would not be soft this year.
Sailor openly stated that the Dragons, under new coach Wayne Bennet, would be a force to be reckoned with year and it is no secret that they are eyeing off the major prize.
Remarkably, to date, ex Australian skipper and arguably one of the best and fairest Australian players of all time, Darren Lockyer, still remains out of contract at the Brisbane Broncos.
In order to ensure that the Brisbane skipper stays put the Broncos will have to find somewhere between one hundred and three hundred thousand dollars per year to meet his demands.
